Abstract:
Sleep is a fundamental physiological process crucial for overall health and well-being, yet many individuals experience disruptions in their sleep patterns. As interest in natural remedies for sleep improvement grows, Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has garnered attention for its potential to enhance sleep quality and regulate the sleep-wake cycle. This research article aims to elucidate the role of Reishi consumed before sleep in sleep maintenance and sleep-wake cycle regulation. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and studies, this article explores the mechanisms underlying Reishi’s effects on sleep and discusses its potential therapeutic applications for promoting better sleep maintenance and regulating the sleep-wake cycle.
Introduction:
Sleep plays a vital role in physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being, yet many individuals experience difficulties with sleep onset, maintenance, and overall sleep quality. Conventional treatments for sleep disturbances may have limitations or side effects, prompting interest in alternative approaches. Reishi mushroom, a revered medicinal fungus with a long history of use in traditional medicine, has emerged as a potential natural remedy for improving sleep quality and regulating the sleep-wake cycle. This article aims to understand the role of Reishi consumed before sleep in sleep maintenance and sleep-wake cycle regulation.
Methods:
A comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Keywords included “Reishi Before Sleep mushroom,” “Ganoderma lucidum,” “sleep maintenance,” “sleep-wake cycle,” and “natural remedies.” Peer-reviewed studies, clinical trials, and systematic reviews investigating the effects of Reishi on sleep maintenance and sleep-wake cycle regulation were included in this review.
Results:
Numerous studies have examined the effects of Reishi consumption before sleep on sleep maintenance and sleep-wake cycle regulation. Clinical trials have demonstrated that Reishi supplementation can lead to improvements in sleep maintenance, including reduced wakefulness during the night and increased total sleep time. Moreover, Reishi has been shown to modulate the sleep-wake cycle by promoting a more balanced distribution of sleep stages, facilitating the transition between wakefulness and sleep, and enhancing the overall continuity of the sleep-wake cycle.
Discussion:
The mechanisms underlying Reishi’s effects on sleep maintenance and sleep-wake cycle regulation are multifaceted and involve its bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, triterpenes, and antioxidants. These compounds exert regulatory effects on neurotransmitter systems and neuroendocrine pathways involved in sleep-wake regulation, circadian rhythms, and stress response. Reishi’s modulation of serotonin, GABA, and melatonin levels may contribute to its effects on sleep maintenance and sleep-wake cycle regulation by promoting relaxation, reducing arousal, and synchronizing circadian rhythms.
